Keep Summer Learning Tuition-Free

Every child deserves a summer filled with learning, discovery, and belonging. For under-resourced families in Kent and Queen Anne’s counties, however, the cost of a high-quality program can put that experience out of reach. Horizons exists to change that.

Horizons provides a six-week, Monday-through-Friday summer learning program at no cost to students. More than 250 children can receive daily academic instruction, swim instruction, nutritious meals, transportation, enrichment activities, field trips, and social-emotional support. Certified teachers, teaching assistants, site directors, social workers, health staff, an enrollment director, public school partners, transportation providers, families, and local nonprofits all contribute to the experience.

Keeping the program tuition-free requires flexible resources. Unrestricted annual gifts help Horizons respond where support is needed most—from hiring experienced educators and caring staff to coordinating enrollment, maintaining safe operations, providing materials, filling partnership gaps, and ensuring that every program day runs smoothly. General operating support holds the whole model together.

The result is access with measurable purpose. Beginning- and end-of-program assessments track student learning, with the goal that more than 80 percent of students maintain or improve their reading scores and more than 80 percent maintain or improve their math scores. Students also build swimming skills, confidence, and social-emotional awareness. Over time, these experiences support stronger attendance, academic progress, and future opportunity.
